Litfuse Review- Irish Meadows by Susan Anne Mason

Wow! Two reviews in one day?! Even I'm impressed with myself! I've spent my morning tracing out primitive wooden snowmen for our upcoming Seasonal craft show in November. I decided to come up for lunch and my book to find my "just got in the mail yesterday new book" had been not so lovingly chewed by my cat. *Sigh* Finding virtually nothing for lunch on top of it, I decided I needed to blog. So here I am!

*Summary*

1911, Long Island, New York Faced With an Uncertain Future, Sometimes All You Have Left Is the Courage to Dream
Brianna and Colleen O'Leary know their Irish immigrant father expects them to marry well. Recently he's put even more pressure on them, insinuating that the very future of their Long Island horse farm,Irish Meadows, rests in their ability to land prosperous husbands. Both girls, however, have different visions for their futures.

Brianna, a quiet girl with a quick mind, dreams of attending college. Vivacious Colleen, meanwhile, is happy to marry--as long as her father's choice meets her exacting standards of the ideal groom. When former stable hand Gilbert Whelan returns from business school and distant relative Rylan Montgomery visits Long Island during his seminary training, the two men quickly complicate everyone's plans.

As the farm slips ever closer to ruin, James O'Leary grows more desperate. It will take every ounce of courage for both sisters to avoid being pawns in their father's machinations and instead follow their hearts. And even if they do, will they inevitably find their dreams too distant to reach?

 *My Thoughts*

The second I see the word "Anne", I think Green Gables. Gilbert. Classic. And when you add in red hair, well, you've intrigued me! That's why I was shocked to see Susan's cover and heroine...red hair! I was immediately drawn to read the story. Obviously,  if you're like me, it takes a LOT to add up to Anne of Green Gables.

Imagine my surprise however, when the hero stepped in. Mr. Gilbert Whelan! GILBERT!! I was so excited, I'm both happy and ashamed to admit, I devoured this novel. I'm glad I did! This is a book that reads like a historical with a touch of suspense parallel to that of Sarah Sundin. Throughout the story, Susan brought me to emotional highs and lows. At times I had to resist the urge to throw the book due to the sister and father's actions. My heart felt like it was breaking in two for the aching I felt for characters at times. And I laughed and cried throughout Brianna's journey. Completely different story line but still astoundingly similar to what I feel when watching the beloved people of Avonlea!

Another aspect of the book I loved was the unique details throughout. I rarely find books revealing Historical horse farms and I loved learning more. I found the story well written and believable and couldn't put it down! Gripping from beginning to end, Irish Meadows lives up to my comparison admirably! My mother was shocked to hear it from me. Bravo, Susan, you shocked my mother, and wrote a book surely to leave no doubts of my first impression!

   *Audience*

This book is perfect if you love historicals with a bit of a suspense twist. Perfect for teens on up, this book would be enjoyable to Anne of Green Gable type story lovers. It would also appeal to fans of Julie Lessman, Laura Frantz, Tamara Alexander, and Rosanne M. White!
